North State School recognises that participation in sport and physical activity plays a significant role in the development of a child's life. We actively encourage all students to participate in a range of age-appropriate physical activity, school and extra-curricular sport. With a strong importance on “Community" at North Arm State School, our sports days are fun and always full of spirit.
Physical education skills form the foundation for later involvement in sport. Prep students are involved in a balancing/spatial awareness program called "Gross Motor Skills" which helps these young students develop the skills necessary for involvement in a range of physical activities.
Students are introduced to games with introductory skills taught, and with the aid of Sunshine Coast sporting associations including Sunshine Coast Football, National Rugby League, AFL Queensland and Tennis Queensland and more.
Those students who exhibit a higher level of sporting skill have the opportunity to represent our Nambour District (a group of 19+ schools of which North Arm is a part), Sunshine Coast Region and even Queensland. Students are also able to participate in our future athletes’ program as part of Growing Excellence in North Arm Students (GENAS) Sport program.
Check our newsletter for recent physical education and sport news.
Athletics
Our Senior Athletics Carnival (Years 4-6) is held in late Term 2 and Junior Athletics Carnival (P-3) takes place in late Term 3.
Students train in athletics as a prelude to our annual school athletics carnival, held on the school premises. Students in all year levels take part in carnivals which are planned to ensure all students are able to participate.
Outstanding performances in 10 years and above events may qualify a student for the District Primary Schools Athletics carnival.
Representative Sports
North Arm students are regularly selected for higher sporting honours at district, regional or state representative level. The Sunshine Coastal School Sport Office, together with Nambour District School Sport, continues to offer a representative pathway for our students aged 10 to 12 to attend district, regional, state and national school sport trials/championships.
Specialist physical education lessons
Learners from Prep to Year 6 are involved in HPE lessons with a specialist physical education teacher. The lessons explore themes of locomotion, ball control, throwing and catching, kicking and striking, motor skills and more.

During term 4, all students in year 6 participate in an accredited Surf LifeSaving Program in partnership with Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club and Queensland Surf Lifesaving.
The program includes:
• Surf Education
• Still water skills evaluation
• Surf survival and rescue skills
• Surf awareness
• Rip identification
• Basic first aide
• Basic rescue in moderate surf conditions.
Australian Curriculum
At the core of Health and Physical Education is the acquisition of movement skills and concepts to enable students to participate in a range of physical activities – confidently, competently and creatively. As a foundation for lifelong physical activity participation and enhanced performance, students acquire an understanding of how the body moves and develop positive attitudes towards physical activity participation. They develop an appreciation of the significance of physical activity, outdoor recreation and sport in Australian society and globally. Movement is a powerful medium for learning, through which students can practise and refine personal, behavioural, social and cognitive skills. Health and Physical Education provides students with an experiential curriculum that is contemporary, relevant, challenging and physically active.
Swimming
A swimming program for year levels Prep - Year 4 occurs each year during Term 4. The aims of the swimming program are as follows:
• to increase water confidence
• to develop water safety
• to develop basic strokes.
• to develop skills for survival swimming.
Lessons are conducted at the Eumundi Aquatic Centre. A swimming carnival for students in Years 4-6 also occurs in Term 4.
