QESSI

North Arm State School is proud to be a part of the QESSI alliance of schools on the Sunshine Coast.

QESSI, which stands for Queensland Environmentally Sustainable Schools Initiative, is

the integration of existing environmental education for sustainability programs for

schools into a holistic process with measurable environmental, economic, social and

educational outcomes.

Environmental education is for everyone, at whatever stage of life they find themselves.

The parent community at North Arm is actively involved in supporting environmentally

sustainable initiatives within the school and in the community.

QESSI initiatives at North Arm State School have included a school audit of energy and

water use and the development of a Strategic Plan to reduce energy use and save

water.

North Arm has an active policy of reducing litter and waste through "litter free lunches"

which encourage all our students to think about the packaging used in their lunchbox

each day.

Some ideas to explore and actions to take:

  •  Establish a fruit and vegetable garden at home and school

  •  Use locally grown produce farmed sustainably

  •  Buy what is needed rather than shopping impulsively

  •  Install water tanks and water saving devices on taps and hoses

  •  Be an active participant and supporter of your local catchment care group

  •  Purchase renewable energy

  •  Install a solar grid system and reduce energy consumption

  •  Install a solar hot water system

  •  Live near and use public transport or walk

  •  Develop wildlife friendly and waterwise gardens
